My first book size contribution to the world. What a scary thought. Here I am less than six months out of uni and I'm writing a book! Even the guys wouldn't believe this. Hey, I was flat out passing english at high school. Well, something must have gone right with my first effort because I got an almost immediate invitation to do this.
The idea of the book was to present a beginners book on both VRML and 3D graphics effects on 2D web pages. A good learning experience. Designed for someone who has never seen VRML before. It was written during the draft period of VRML and released a couple of days after the launch of VRML 2.0 on Agust 4 1996. Even though it was written during the draft period, it was surprisingly accurate to the final spec - despite the Java chapter being completely re-written 4 times in 4 days for due to spec changes. ARRGGGHHHH!!!!.
Anyway, since then it has been through its first revision and all the errors corrected. It is still going reasonably strong as a beginners level book more than two years after release. This is in part due to the stability of the VRML specification since then. There have been a few minor modifications, but only due to changes in the execution model that are covered separately.
As part of my commitment to public service, I've put up all of the examples given in the book on a separate web page so that you may peruse them as needed.
